Quick Start Guide

This algorithm will help decide how to start contraception the same day. It gives guidance on when to use EC and how to start contraception is the patient has recently had unprotected intercourse.

Nexplanon/Implanon

  • Providers: Partial List
  • Supplies needed for insertions
    • Sterile Drape
    • Sterile gloves
    • Betadine or Chlorhexadine
    • Sterile Marker
    • Anesthetic with Epinephrine
    • 27g 1 1/2 inch needle
    • 3 cc syringe
    • Bandaid or Steristrip
    • 2x2 gauze
    • Coban or Ace Bandage
    • Implanon/Nexplanon Kit
  • Instructions for Insertion and Removal(From Implanon.com)
  • Timing of Insertion: Recommend pregnancy test and seven days of non-hormonal contraception after insertion. No pregnancy test or backup contraception needed:
    • if insertion occurs on Day 1-5 of menses
    • if swithing from OCP and insertion occurs during 7 days of hormone free interval
    • during current use of progestin pill
    • within 5 days of 1st trimester abortion
    • upto 3-4 weeks after 2nd trimester abortion or postpartum
  • Supplies for removal
    • Sterile drape
    • Surgical marker
    • Sterile gloves
    • Betadine or Chlorhexadine
    • Anesthetic with epinephrine
    • 27g 1 1/2 inch needle
    • 3cc syringe
    • #15 scalpel
    • Curved mosquito forceps x 2
    • Ruler (contained within surgical marker)
    • Steristrip or Bandaid
    • 2x2 gauze x 2
    • Coban or Ace bandage
